Finding Her Path in Hospice Social Work

This Social Work Month, we honor njHealth's hospice social workers for their unwavering dedication and the meaningful difference they make every single day.

Caitlyn Little never imagined her path would lead her into hospice care. In fact, when she began her journey as a social worker, her world looked very different. Fresh out of Widener University, carrying equal parts determination and compassion, she stepped into an internship at a substance use treatment program in Gloucester County. The work was challenging—raw, emotional, and deeply human. It shaped her. It taught her how to sit with people in their hardest moments, how to listen to stories of loss and hope, and how to support families navigating the uncertain terrain of recovery. Those experiences stayed with her, carried quietly in the way she spoke and the way she showed up for people.

Caitlyn then found herself at njHealth, stepping into the delicate and powerful world of hospice and healthcare. She hadn’t planned it—life simply led her there. And surprisingly, beautifully, it felt right.

As she entered her third year with NJHealth, she often reflected on what made her work so meaningful. It wasn’t the routine of the days or the charts she completed. It was the people. The families who let her into their lives, sometimes for only a moment, sometimes long enough for their stories to intertwine with her own. She found fulfillment in being able to bring comfort, clarity, or even a small sense of peace during moments that mattered most.

"What brings me the greatest joy is being able to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals and families I serve," she said "supporting them through both the good moments and the more challenging ones."

Living in the Gloucester County community of Clayton, Caitlyn, connected to the people she serves in a profound way through her work as a social worker.

NJHealth has become more than a workplace. It was a place that nurtured her growth, encouraged her curiosity, and supported her both personally and professionally. Every day, she stepped into her role with gratitude—grateful for the challenges that shaped her, the families who trusted her, and the team that stood beside her.

Caitlyn’s journey was still unfolding, but one thing was certain: she was making a meaningful difference. And in doing so, she had discovered a purpose she hadn’t even known she was searching for.
