There are moments when words simply are not enough. A familiar song, a soothing melody, or the gentle strum of a guitar can reach places in the heart that conversation alone cannot. At NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, we witness every day how music has the power to comfort, connect, and inspire. Simply put, music is happiness.

Recently, that joy was evident during a music therapy session at Seacrest Healthcare in Little Egg Harbor, where our lovely patient Ellen Holden shared smiles, laughter, and great vibes with her daughter Erin, Nurse Case Manager Terry Brooks, and NJHealth Music Therapist Karen Melita. As Karen played her guitar, the room filled with warmth, connection, and positive energy. It was far more than a musical performance. It was a meaningful therapeutic experience that brought comfort and happiness to everyone present.

"For many patients, hearing a favorite song sparks treasured memories and creates opportunities for meaningful interactions with family members," explained Karen

. "Music often brings a sense of familiarity and peace, even when other forms of communication become challenging."

Creating Moments That Matter

The beauty of music therapy lies in its ability to meet people exactly where they are. Whether through singing, listening to cherished songs, songwriting, relaxation exercises, or creating musical legacies for loved ones, music becomes a bridge between emotions, memories, and personal expression.

In hospice care, these moments can be especially powerful. A favorite hymn may strengthen spiritual connections. A beloved love song may rekindle cherished memories. A shared musical experience may bring family members together in ways they never expected. Music can reduce feelings of isolation while creating opportunities for joy, even during life's most challenging chapters.

Happiness Through Harmony

At NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, we believe caring for the whole person includes nurturing emotional and spiritual well-being alongside physical comfort. Music therapy is one of the many ways we help patients and families find peace, connection, and meaning.

"Watching a patient smile, tap a foot, sing along, or simply close their eyes and find comfort in a familiar melody reminds us why music matters," Karen explained. "It has the remarkable ability to lift spirits, ease burdens, and create lasting memories."

Because sometimes the most powerful medicine isn't found in a bottle. Sometimes it's found in a song.

Music is happiness. And happiness is something worth sharing. NJHealth is one of only a few hospices that offer music therapy.
