Don't be afraid of hospice. It's a word that causes some to be uncomfortable, but that is because it is misunderstood.
Hospice simply is specialized care for people with advanced illnesses. It maintains quality of life through symptom and pain management for those with a terminal diagnosis. It is provided to the patient wherever they may call home. Unfortunately, because of misconceptions about hospice, many do not get the care they need and are entitled to receive. Let's dispel the three most common myths that are often puzzling.
MYTH #1 Hospice Means You Are Giving Up Hope
FACT: Enrolling in hospice is choosing to focus on quality of life, comfort and dignity. Published studies show that people receiving hospice care live about 29 to 44 days longer than those who are not on hospice. Additionally, they are not only living longer, but that quality of life is better because their symptoms are being managed, reducing their physical and emotional pain.
MYTH #2 Hospice Care is Expensive
FACT: Hospice care is 100% covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance companies.
MYTH #3 Medication Given by Hospice Will Expedite Death
FACT: Medications will not cause death but will reduce pain and anxiety. The RN/Case Manager explains how and when to administer these medications.
