Life Is Short—No Matter How Long It Is: Start Your Bucket List Today

A message from the NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care team

At NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, we have the privilege of walking alongside patients and families during some of life’s most meaningful moments. In that work, we are reminded often of a simple truth: life is short, no matter how long it is.

We do not need to wait for a milestone birthday, a diagnosis, retirement, or a major life change to begin doing the things that bring us joy. The best time to notice what matters is now. The best time to make memories is now. The best time to say yes to something meaningful is now.

When people hear the words “bucket list,” they may picture faraway travel, big adventures, or once-in-a-lifetime dreams. Those can certainly be part of it. But a bucket list does not have to be expensive, complicated, or out of reach. Sometimes the most meaningful wishes are simple: sitting by the ocean, calling an old friend, baking a favorite recipe, visiting a place that holds memories, or spending an afternoon with someone you love.

"We encourage everyone—patients, caregivers, families, volunteers, and community members—to think about what brings happiness, peace, laughter, connection, or purpose," said Suzanne Martinelli, CEO of NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care. "Then take one small step toward it. Life does not have to be perfect to be meaningful. A day does not have to be extraordinary to be treasured."

What Would Be on Your Bucket List?

If you are not sure where to begin, start with what makes you feel most alive, most grateful, or most connected. Your bucket list can be big, small, practical, sentimental, adventurous, quiet, creative, or deeply personal.

Bucket List Ideas to Inspire You

  • Watch the sunrise or sunset from a favorite place.

  • Write letters to family members or friends.

  • Record favorite memories or family stories.

  • Visit the beach, a park, a garden, or another peaceful place.

  • Make a playlist of songs that bring back special memories.

  • Cook or bake a favorite family recipe.

  • Look through old photos and share the stories behind them.

  • Call or visit someone you have been meaning to reconnect with.

  • Try a new hobby, craft, puzzle, class, or creative project.

  • Have a favorite meal with people you love.

  • Plant flowers, herbs, or a small memory garden.

  • Take a short local trip to a place you have always wanted to see.

  • Share words of forgiveness, gratitude, or love.

  • Create a legacy keepsake, such as a scrapbook, recipe book, memory box, or video message.

  • Spend a quiet day doing exactly what brings you peace.

Make the Most of Today

A bucket list is not only about what we hope to do someday. It is also about how we choose to live today. It reminds us to slow down, pay attention, and make room for joy. It encourages us to spend time with people who matter, revisit places that bring comfort, and create moments that become lasting memories.

From all of us at NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, we invite you to ask yourself: What have I been putting off? What would bring me joy? Who do I want to spend time with? What memory do I want to make?

Life is short—no matter how long it is. Make the phone call. Take the ride. Share the story. Say the words. Enjoy what you can, while you can, and make the most of every day.
