Love it or hate it; winter is upon us. Snow and ice make for beautiful yet dangerous conditions and outdoor activities. Even getting in and out of your vehicle can cause a tumble.
The NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care teams are on the road in these conditions caring for our patients. We offer a few tips learned along the way to reduce your risk of slip and falls.
Safe Winter Walking Tips
Use caution when shifting your weight while exiting your vehicle.
Maintain three points of contact when stepping out of higher vehicles like trucks and SUVs.
Use the vehicle for support
Do not grab objects while you exit the vehicle.
Get out first with both feet on the ground, then reach in to retrieve items.
When walking on ice or snow, remember to walk like a penguin. This helps you to maintain your center of balance, so you are less likely to fall.
Use handrails when going up or down steps
Take steps slowly
Wear proper footwear
Avoid talking on cell phones while you walk
If you do fall, stay calm, check for injuries, and get up using the following techniques to avoid further harm.
Immediate Steps After a Fall
Stay Calm and Assess:
Take a moment to breathe and check for pain or numbness.
Avoid rushing, as sudden movements can worsen injuries
Move to a Safer Spot:
If you can safely drag or scoot yourself to a dry or less slippery area, do so before attempting to stand.
Check for Serious Injuries:
Red flags such as severe pain, inability to move, numbness, dizziness, or head injury require immediate medical attention.
Safe Technique to Get Up
Side-Roll & Crawl Method (most used):
Roll onto your side, then push onto your hands and knees.
Crawl to something sturdy for support.
Place one foot flat and push upward carefully into standing.
As always, if you can stay inside during these weather conditions, please do so. That is the best way to avoid injury.
