Winter Continues...plus a Super Bowl winner predicted

Learning that there will be no early spring is not the news we were hoping for here at NJHealth. The hospice and palliative care teams are not thrilled to be out and about in this cold and icy weather. But their dedication to the care of our patients always comes first. Not even the Groundhog Day prediction of more winter weather will stop them.

Did you know that Groundhog Day is celebrated throughout the county with a range of animals. Beyond the traditional groundhog, other animals including goats, opossum, bullfrog, alligator, owls, marmot, grizzly bears, rattle snake, squirrels, chickens, and locally a box turtle made a prediction on February 2nd about winter's reach into the days ahead.

Sadly, Tomothy the Turtle of Sewell saw his shadow today, concurring with his more famous colleague Punxsutawney Phil that there would be six more weeks of winter.

Tomothy is relatively new to weather prognosticating. He is an eastern box turtle at the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum at Rowan University.

Also in New Jersey, groundhog Lady Edwina of Essex, proclaimed a longer winter ahead. But Lady Edwina has other forecasting talents and picked the Seahawks to win this year's Super Bowl. She successfully predicted the Eagles win last year over Kansas City.

In New Jersey, the predictions for Groundhog Day 2026 are as follows:

  • Punxsutawney Phil: Predicted six more weeks of winter, indicating a winter season for the area.

  • Tomothy the Turtle: Predicted six more weeks of winter in southern NJ.

  • Lady Edwina of Essex: Predicted six more weeks of winter, consistent with the other forecasts.

  • Stonewall Jackson: Predicted six more weeks of winter, continuing the tradition of local forecasts.

  • Paulie the Rabbit: Predicted six more weeks of winter, serving as an honorary forecaster for Milltown.

These predictions suggest that New Jersey will experience winter weather conditions for the foreseeable future, with no signs of an early spring.
