Lifelong Learning for Hospice Volunteers
Updated: 4 hours ago

At NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, we believe that learning never stops. Just as our staff members participate in ongoing education and training, our dedicated volunteers also receive regular in-service programs to help them stay current on best practices and better serve our patients and their families.
Recently, volunteers took part in educational sessions focused on both dementia care, and the unique end-of-life needs of veterans. The dementia training helped volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the behaviors, communication challenges, and emotional needs often experienced by patients living with memory loss. The veteran-focused in-service explored the life experiences, sacrifices, and special considerations that can impact veterans as they approach the end of life.
These educational opportunities strengthen our volunteers' ability to provide compassionate companionship, meaningful support, and comfort to those we serve. Whether sitting at a bedside, listening to a life story, or offering reassurance to a family member, our volunteers are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to make a difference.
"The many untold stories of our veterans whose voice they may never share with us humans they can and do often share through pet therapy," said Linda Karwowski of Vineland, a pet therapy volunteer on the NJHealth Team. " The in-service was so helpful by relating that listening to our veterans is key to a shared encounter."

We are grateful for volunteers who are committed not only to serving but also to
learning. Their dedication to ongoing education helps ensure that every patient and family receives the exceptional care, understanding, and respect they deserve.
