The holidays are particularly challenging after the death of a loved one. You may not feel up to ringing in a new year if you are facing it with a loss. Although they are no longer with you physically, fond memories of your time together will help bring them into this new year spiritually.Â
These are the people who helped make the holiday joyful and missing them can be profoundly challenging. Those memories may bring a tear, but some may also make you smile, even laugh. It's okay to laugh and cry. You can feel sadness, nostalgic, and joy all at the same time.
Holiday Remembrances
Yet, even in grief there are ways to honor their memory and manage your emotions.  It may help to include them in your traditions or create new ones such as:
Light a candle in their memory during holiday gatherings.
Share stories about them with family and friends, keeping their memories alive.
Prepare their favorite dish or engage in an activity they loved creating a sense of presence.Â
Write a letter to your loved one about your thoughts and feelings.
Grief does not follow a set timeline. You may feel fine and overwhelmed all in the same day. Holidays can complicate things further, so it’s okay to skip gatherings or leave early if you are uncomfortable. The holiday season will be different without your loved one, but you can find ways to honor their memory. Reach out for support from family, friends, or professionals if you need it. You are not alone in how you feel as you keep the spirit of your loved one alive in your heart all year long.Â
