For many people, the word hospice can be frightening. Unfortunately, misconceptions often prevent individuals and families from learning about the many benefits hospice and palliative care provide. At NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, one of our most important missions is educating the public so that fear is replaced with understanding, comfort, and hope.

Hospice care is not about giving up. Rather, it is about helping patients live each day as fully and comfortably as possible. Hospice and palliative care focus on improving quality of life through expert symptom management, pain control, emotional support, spiritual care, and practical assistance for both patients and their loved ones. These services help individuals navigate serious illness with dignity, comfort, and compassionate support.

To help spread awareness and answer questions, NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care regularly participates in community education programs throughout South Jersey. Recently, Ottilie Parsons, RN, NJHealth Team's Regional Clinical Liaison presented a Lunch and Learn program at the Cancer Support Community NJ at Gilda's Club in Linwood. Attendees gathered to learn more about the hospice benefit, eligibility requirements, available services, and the many ways hospice supports both patients and families.

"The information that you presented, and the manner in which it was done, was educational and supportive," said Erin Thompson, MSW, LSW, program director at the Cancer Support Community NJ. " I know that our members truly enjoyed learning more about both palliative care and hospice."

During the presentation, participants learned that hospice care is designed to provide comprehensive support when curative treatment is no longer the primary goal. The discussion focused on how interdisciplinary care teams work together to address physical symptoms while also supporting patients' emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Family members and caregivers also benefit from education, guidance, respite support, and bereavement services.

Questions and open discussion allowed attendees to share concerns and gain a clearer understanding of what hospice truly means. Many were surprised to learn that hospice care can be provided wherever a patient calls home, including private residences, assisted living communities, nursing facilities, and group homes.

"Education is one of the most powerful tools we have," explained Parsons. "When people understand what hospice and palliative care really are, they recognize that these services focus on comfort, quality of life, and support for the entire family."

Through outreach programs such as a recent Lunch and Learn at Cancer Support Community NJ at Gilda's Club, NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care continues its commitment to ensuring that community members have accurate information about end-of-life care options. By fostering understanding and open conversations, we help individuals and families make informed decisions and access the compassionate care they deserve when they need it most.
