Cape May County Documentary Shares Global Story of D-Day Remembrance

Eighty years after the beaches of Normandy became the stage for one of history’s most pivotal military operations, a remarkable work of art is helping ensure that the stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience are never forgotten.

A Thread Through History is a powerful documentary that chronicles the creation and journey of The Longest Yarn, an extraordinary 80-meter (265-foot) wool tapestry crafted by volunteers from around the world to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Produced in Cape May County, New Jersey, the film explores how a simple medium—yarn—became a compelling way to tell one of the most important stories of the 20th century. "The film reminds us that remembrance takes many forms," said NJHealth Team member Margie Barham, director of special projects and public relations.  "This story is quite literally woven stitch- by-stitch by passionate and talented knitters and crocheters around the world. The display is connecting people through a shared commitment to honoring the past and preserving it for the future."

The Longest Yarn is far more than an artistic achievement. Through hundreds of handcrafted knitted and crocheted scenes, depicting the events surrounding the D-Day invasion, the Allied campaign across Europe, and the human cost of war. It serves as a living memorial, honoring not only the soldiers who fought but also the families, communities, and future generations affected by the conflict.

Created by volunteers across the globe, the project demonstrates how people from different countries and backgrounds can come together to preserve history. Each stitch represents a commitment to remembrance, ensuring that the lessons and sacrifices of World War II continue to resonate decades later.

Produced through the efforts of American Veterans Media and The Longest Yarn Committee in Cape May, New Jersey, A Thread Through History premiered at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center on May 15, 2026, and has since reached audiences through television, radio, streaming platforms, and online viewing opportunities.

The documentary serves as both a historical record and a heartfelt tribute to those who served. It illustrates how art can preserve memories, foster understanding, and inspire future generations to appreciate the freedoms secured through tremendous sacrifice.
