At NJHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, we are continually inspired by the kindness and generosity of our community. Recently, we received a thoughtful donation of handmade fidget blankets from the South Shore Stitchers Quilt Guild, and we are incredibly grateful for their support of our patients and families.

While they may look like colorful lap blankets, fidget blankets serve a much greater purpose. Designed with a variety of textures, ribbons, buttons, zippers, pockets, and other sensory items, these blankets provide comfort and engagement for patients experiencing dementia, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety, restlessness, or cognitive decline.

What Is a Fidget Blanket?

A fidget blanket is a therapeutic sensory tool created to occupy busy hands and stimulate the senses. The blankets are typically placed on a patient's lap and feature safe, tactile items that encourage touching, exploring, and gentle movement.

For many hospice patients, especially those living with memory-related illnesses, fidget blankets can provide:

  • Reduced anxiety and agitation

  • A calming and soothing activity

  • Sensory stimulation

  • Increased focus and engagement

  • A sense of familiarity and comfort

  • Reduced boredom and restlessness

Patients often find comfort in touching different textures, opening and closing zippers, or exploring pockets and ribbons. These simple activities can help redirect anxious behaviors and provide meaningful moments of calm.

A Gift Made With Love

Each fidget blanket is unique, reflecting the creativity and compassion of the person who made it. Beyond their therapeutic benefits, these blankets send a powerful message to our patients: someone cares.

The members of the South Shore Stitchers Quilt Guild have lovingly donated their time and talents to create these special blankets, and their generosity will touch the lives of many hospice patients. We extend our heartfelt thanks to them for helping us provide comfort, dignity, and peace during a patient's hospice experience.
