Quilt of Valor Presented to Father Miles Barrett

At the February meeting of the Citizens/Veterans Advisory Council (CVAC), member Father Miles Barrett was honored with a hand‑crafted Quilt of Valor in recognition of his service. The quilt was presented by Quilts of Valor representative Kathy Tweed and made by quilt artist Crystal Smith, who designed and created this quilt specifically for Father Miles.

The Citizens/Veterans Advisory Council, serving Cape May County, is dedicated to supporting veterans and their families through community outreach, advocacy, and assistance. NJ Health Hospice and Palliative Care is proud to be a member of this remarkable group.

Father Miles Barrett, known simply as Fr Miles by the community, is a Catholic priest who has served as Chaplain for the U.S. Coast Guard in Cape May.  He has been recognized for his service in the Navy, where he earned several commendations including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. At CVAC is well loved and appreciated for his dedication to serving veterans. He also, is a pretty good singer.

The Quilt of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a profound and vivid dream experienced by its founder, Catherine Roberts, while her son Nat was deployed in Iraq. In the dream, she saw a soldier sitting on the edge of his bed, weighed down by the invisible wounds of war. In the next moment, he appeared wrapped in a quilt—his despair replaced by comfort, hope, and healing. This vision became the mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation: to create and award handmade quilts that offer warmth, gratitude, and support to those touched by war.

It was in this spirit of honor and healing that Father Miles received his Quilt of Valor—an expression of deep appreciation for his service, sacrifice, and continued dedication to others.
