Music makes the world go round so how fitting that on this World Music Therapy Week we shine a spotlight on the impact of music therapy makes to our patients and families.
World Music Therapy Week (April 10 to 15) is an annual international initiative led by the World Federation of Music Therapy to raise awareness about the transformative power of music therapy in promoting health, well-being, and social connection. The 2026 theme, Connecting Borders, emphasizes how music therapy supports personal and interpersonal growth across cultures, communities, and professional disciplines. Here at NJ Health Hospice and Palliative Care we see this benefit every day.
To celebrate, our Music Therapist Karen Melita drums up excitement—quite literally—with her brand‑new, custom‑painted music buckets! These vibrant creations are far more than decorative containers; they’re soon to be fitted with drumheads and filled with the joyful assortment of instruments used during music therapy sessions with patients.
Each bucket has a heartwarming origin story. A devoted supporter of the njHealth Hospice music therapy program transformed ordinary Home Depot pails into colorful works of art. Splashed with lively hues and adorned with musical notes and symbols, every bucket looks poised to burst into song.

Karen and fellow Music Therapist Tim Bretschenider couldn’t be more delighted. “We just love them,” Karen shared. “These repurposed pails bring not only music, but also a burst of color, creativity, and kindness into our sessions.” While the generous artist behind this thoughtful gift remains anonymous, the gratitude is anything but.
Thank you, mystery patron, for these bright and beautiful Buckets of Music Joy—gifts that will continue to bring rhythm, comfort, and smiles to patients every day.
Not all hospices offer music therapy, but we do because we know how much it helps our patients. To learn more about the benefits of music therapy click this link here
