Janice McMahon wanted to be a hospice nurse. She recalls the days when she found a passion for caring for the elderly while working full-time in a long-term care facility and attending classes to earn her RN degree. Starting her nursing career as a young LPN working what was then Millville Hospital, she then found a career that would not only shape her profession but also bring her personal contentment.
Although at that time she was not a hospice care provider, many of her patients at the facility were at the end of their lives. She felt privileged to be there for them, and she always had the hospice philosophy in her mind—providing comfort, dignity and grace to her patients.
“For me, I have felt rewarded countless times by smiles, hugs or just holding the hands of my patients,” she says. “Knowing I could make a difference in someone's life is what nursing is all about.” As she approached retirement, she realized she still wanted to be a nurse—and work in hospice. That’s when she saw an ad from NJ Health Hospice and Palliative Care for a part-time RN.
“Without hesitation, I immediately felt compelled to apply,” she recalls. That was nearly three years ago, and she continues to be passionate about it. “I really feel it was meant to be,” she says with a smile, noting that she especially enjoys the interactions with patients and families.
Having the hospice experience with her mother many years ago left a positive impact on her. Although she was a nurse, she learned so much about hospice care. “I really don't know what I would have done without them,” she recalled.” I hoped that one day I would have to opportunity to work for hospice.”
In a fast-paced office, Janice has found that there is always something to do. “I have many "special projects" and take on whatever is necessary to contribute to the success of the team,” she explains. “I have found the perfect "semi-retirement" job where I can still make a difference and be surrounded by peers that are caring and compassionate.”
Janice and her husband make Millville their home. Semi-retired, she has what is the best of both, melding the joy of her career with traveling and spending time with her daughter and son-in-law, stepson, family and friends.
